Understanding Attachment

Attachment theory explores how our early relationships and experiences can shape the way we connect with others. These experiences can influence how we understand trust, safety, closeness, boundaries and relationships throughout life.

Understanding your attachment patterns can help you recognise relationship behaviours, emotional responses and needs, and create healthier, more secure ways of connecting with yourself and others.

Understanding Relationship Patterns

Schemas are deeply held beliefs or patterns that develop from our early experiences and relationships. They can influence how we see ourselves, what we expect from others, and how we respond in relationships.

For example, if someone learned early in life that their needs were often ignored, they may develop a belief that they cannot rely on others. As an adult, this might show up as difficulty trusting, people-pleasing, becoming overly independent, or feeling anxious when someone becomes distant.

These patterns can sometimes operate automatically, particularly when a relationship triggers old feelings of rejection, abandonment, criticism or lack of safety. Recognising these patterns can help us understand our reactions, challenge unhelpful beliefs, and develop healthier ways of relating.
